U.S. Justice Department Cracks Down on Drug Crimes and Sex Crimes

Posted on May 27, 2025 in Criminal Law

Hartford, CT Criminal Defense AttorneyThe administration of President Donald Trump has taken a tough-on-crime stance since he assumed office for his second term. Officials at the U.S. Department of Justice have highlighted multiple operations that have targeted alleged criminals throughout the United States and internationally, including a large number of cases involving drug crimes and sex crimes. In many cases, these efforts have been a part of the administration’s focus on illegal immigration, with undocumented immigrants being arrested.

Because of the increased focus on certain types of criminal offenses, people who are accused of these crimes may be treated harshly, and they could face severe penalties if they are convicted. Anyone who is being investigated for drug crimes, sex crimes, or other related offenses will need to make sure to secure representation from an attorney who has experience in cases involving federal crimes.

Arrests of People Allegedly Involved in Fentanyl and Opioid Trafficking

The Justice Department recently announced that 270 people were arrested as part of Operation RapTor, which focused on people who allegedly used the "dark web" to buy, sell, and distribute controlled substances. This operation involved multiple law enforcement agencies in the United States, including the DEA and the FBI, as well as international partners in Europe, Asia, and South America.

This operation specifically addressed the use of sites on the dark web to import, sell, and distribute narcotics. Some people were arrested for the distribution of fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, and counterfeit prescription drugs laced with fentanyl or methamphetamine. Large amounts of drugs, cash, and firearms were seized during these arrests. Alleged offenders have been charged with offenses such as drug trafficking, drug conspiracy, and money laundering through the use of cryptocurrency and other methods.

Attorney General Pam Bondi highlighted the fact that several people who were arrested are undocumented immigrants, emphasizing the Trump administration’s focus on arresting and prosecuting immigrants who are accused of crimes. While Bondi and other members of the administration have suggested that undocumented immigrants are more likely to commit crimes, this is untrue; immigrants are less likely to be involved in illegal activities.

Arrests of Alleged Child Sex Offenders

In another effort to crack down on criminal activity, the Justice Department recently arrested 205 people as part of Operation Restore Justice. This operation was spearheaded by the FBI, and it targeted people who are accused of child sex abuse. FBI director Kash Patel stated that the goal of this operation and other ongoing efforts is to hunt down and cage child sex predators.

As part of this operation, people have been arrested for offenses such as the possession or distribution of child pornography, online solicitation of minors, and other sex crimes. Some charges have involved the transportation of minors across state lines, which may lead to federal charges for child sex trafficking.
