The Oscar-nominated documentary The Alabama Solution has provided a look inside the prison system, giving viewers an understanding of the conditions inside correctional facilities and the harsh treatment that prisoners often face. Much of the footage used in the documentary was obtained through the use of contraband cell phones by prisoners. 

While one incident depicted in the film involved the death of Steven Davis after he was beaten by guards, many more instances of cruel treatment were shown. Because prisons are overcrowded and understaffed, violence often occurs. At the same time, many prisoners suffer from drug addictions when using drugs smuggled into prisons, and they are not provided with the treatment they need. The documentary demonstrates that officials are often indifferent to the suffering of prisoners while failing to protect their safety and failing to provide the support and services needed to help people re-integrate into society after serving their sentences. 

Statistics Show the Issues Affecting U.S. Prisons

The prison system in the United States involves thousands of state prisons, local jails, federal prisons, juvenile detention facilities, and other facilities where people are incarcerated or detained. There are nearly two million people held in detention facilities throughout the country. The cost of maintaining the prison system is at least $182 billion per year.

While rates of incarceration are high, this has not been because of an increase in crime. In fact, crime rates have steadily decreased in recent years, with the crime rate in 2024 being the lowest since 1961. While many people believe that harsh punishments are necessary to deter people from committing crimes, the reality is that long prison sentences do not prevent future crimes. Issues affecting prisoners, such as poor nutrition, lack of medical care, mental health issues, and a lack of rehabilitative services, can make it harder for prisoners to find work or maintain housing after being released. This will make them more likely to commit additional crimes and continue a cycle of incarceration that may be almost impossible to escape.

The increased use of community supervision, including probation, parole, or pre-trial supervision, has also led to higher levels of incarceration. While these options are often seen as more lenient alternatives to serving time in prison, they increase the likelihood that people will commit technical violations, such as failing to report to probation officers, violating curfew restrictions, or being unable to pay fees. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, around 24 percent of people incarcerated in state prisons were on probation at the time of their arrest.
